In India Vs Pakistan match of Asia cup few Kashmiri students in Meerut and Noida shouted pro Pakistan slogan after Pakistan won that match. University administration took immediate action and called police and expelled all the students from campus. Police charged them with sedition charges. What is sedition charges? Let us see:

IPC Section 124A (Sedition)
Chapter VI “Of offences against the state” section 124A “Sedition”. It writes

Whoever, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred of contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards the Government establishment by law in India shall be punished.

Later state government removed charges against students and Election Commissioner asked the UP state government why sedition charges removed.

Punishment
Imprisonment for life and fine, or imprisonment for 3 years and fine or fine. It is cognizable, non-bailable triable by court of session and non compoundable.

History
This law considered as very strong law in time of British rule. Initially similar law was in Section 5 of Act 27, in 1870. Later it was substituted by Section 4 of Act 4 in 1898. Punishment of life imprisonment was added by Section 117 of Act 26 in 1955.

Current Scenario
Previously Arundhati Roy was sought to charged with this law. Binayak Sen and Aseem Trivedi have been charged for this law by court. Indian left wing is doing huge movement to repeal/weaken such laws like Sedition, AFSPA (Arm Force Special Power Act) etc. which penalises person for crime committed against state (AFSPA is not exactly against state). Particularly in IISc there is one madam, who is wife of IISc faculty, couple of times did signature campaigns for support of repealing AFSPA.
