Hindu Shastr describes three aspects of Karm, to obtain favour, or for mitigation of our pain, namely Upvas (Fasting), Daan, Jap. Fasting is one form of Puja being done in devotion to God. Fasting is performed on Prathama, Ekadashi, Poornima and other relevant Hindu festivals. Many “progressive” despise fasting, or any religious act for that matter. Fasting is a type of Tapasya offered to get blessing from God. Sacrifice of something is involved in Tapasya and that is why God loves Tapasya. In fasting, a meal is sacrificed and hence it is type of Tapasya. Gautam Buddh sacrificed, in stages, food, fruits, leaves, water and finaly survived only on air on his pathway to Nirvan.
A form of Tapasya named fasting has ‘recognition’ from science in 2016 when researcher Prof. Yoshinori Ohsumi awarded Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2016 “for the discoveries of mechanism for autophagy“. Autophagy is a mechanism prevailing at cellular level in which harmful matter inside body are processed and converted in to useful matter (refer link here). I hope you fasted on Mahashivratri. This fasting ritual has scientific significance; Tapasya offered through fasting is returned with blessing in the form of recycling of unwanted body chemicals in to useful proteins. The three aspects are:
- Religious: Fasting is religious act performed to obtain favour from God.
- Spiritual: Atma is purified through Tapasya by connecting with God.
- Scientific: Cells and body purified through mechanism named autophagy.
Unlike other religions, where fasting occasion occurs once in a year, in Hinduism it commences every month e.g. Prathama, Ekadashi, Poornima etc. It is more relevant because intermittent fasting also activates autophagy.
ઝબકારો: Fasting is religious act which signifies spirituality that Atma purified through Tapasya by connecting with God. This act of fasting has scientific significance that cells, and body, purified through mechanism named autophagy. Hinduism by every inch is scientific. Celebrate science via celebrating Hindu festivals and rituals!
I had question why Poornima is important in Hinduism. According to Jyotish, Sun signifies Atma and Moon signifies Mann (weak Sun/Atma indicate lowest level of moral standard e.g. my wife has weakest Sun that’s why she choose pathway of #FakeCases). On Poornima Sun and Moon facing each other and Moon receives maximum light/energy from Sun. Interpreting, transfer of spiritual power from Atma to Mann is at peak on Poornima, making it auspicious for spirituality attainment. It also indicate Atma is the source of spirituality and that’s why, according to Krushn in Geeta, Atma is above Mann (refer my this post explaining a shlok from Bhagvad Geeta).
Many Hindu customs have explanation in Jyotish. That is why it is Vedang.
Few months ago I visited Mahakaleshvar temple in Ujjain. To me, it uncovered hidden secret about Shiv. Shivling, temple construction, and Dhvaja (flag) are typical part of Shiv temple. Plenty of literature available on temple construction which can be referred. Here, I am talking about Shivling and Dhvaja. There were questions in my mind such as why its name is Mahakal, why it is Dakshinabhimukh (southward opening) instead of Poorvabhimukh (Eastward opening), why Ujjain considered as center of India. To that, I had some astronomical informations such as tropic of Cancer-an extreme north point of Sun’s trajectory (considering geocentric motion), which divides India in two halves horizontally, passes through Ujjain.
Mahakaleshvar is the only Dakshinabhimukh Jyotirling among twelve. It means throughout year rays will enter Garbhgruh and Shivling will have constant eye over Sun’s entire trajectory (winter solstice to summer solstice) as Ujjain is on tropic of Cancer. According to Jyotish Shiv is Aadhipati of Sun and through this arrangement Shiv is continuously watching Sun from its southern extreme to northern extreme trajectory.
Understanding about Shiv would not have learned if I had not visited Jantar Mantar. I saw sundial to measure time. Those who are not familiar with it, construction wise it is simple pole on circular platform. Spatial position of Sun and time of day can be measured from length of shadow of pole and trajectory of shadow of tip of pole in day time. This was for estimation while precise instrument to calculate time was available besides it. Even many Britishers reported that in nineteenth century India time was measured from length of human shadow
Pole and Flag
Money comes through only three means; agriculture, mining, petroleum. Everything human produces which is convertible to money is basically either of these three. Ancient India was agriculture country which entirely depends on seasons. Rain, proliferation of insects etc seasonal phenomena depends on placement of Sun and Moon. Hence, exact spatial positions of Sun and Moon are necessary to precisely predict seasons.
Pole inserted on top of temple is a type of sundial where priest can predict seasons from the situation of shadow of pole. The flag inserted over pole helps in getting information of wind current. Wind coming from Nairuty (SW), will furl flag in Ishan (NE) direction, will bring moist air to begin monsoon while wind coming from Ishan (NE), will furl flag in Nairuty (SW) direction, will be dry air bringing autumnal season. I have already explained the significance of wind current in Vaastushastr in my previous communication .
Where is spirituality in this science?
Moksh is supreme goal of any Aatma and its gateway is through death: ultimate reality of every living creature on earth. Since Shiv rules death, every Aatma must pass through Shiv inbetween journey to Moksh. He only can subvert bad karm. Popularly Kaal is the single word used for bad time, bad karm, sin, and death. As shadow attached with pole signifies time, shadow attached with Shivling signifies Kaal of Aatma. On summer solstice (in current era it is falling on 21 June) disappearing of shadow of pole (or Shivling) resembles Aatma’s Kaal is devoured by Shiv. It means Mahakal Shiv is destroying Kaal at Ujjain. This is why he is ‘Kaalo Ke Kaal Mahakaal’, a supreme Kaal who has authority over all Kaals (karms).
Declared as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO , it commences on specific combinations of planetary positions which I am yet to understand. The ritual similar to mass bathing of Rishis on river Drisdvati, conducted at every twelve years, is mentioned in Vaayu Puran but its connection with Kumbh Mela is yet to be established. Astrolabes (Jantar Mantar) were needed to precisely calculate beginning of festivals.
Sun Jupiter Moon Other combination
Haridwar Aries Aquarius(Kumbh)
Prayagraj Capricorn Aries Capricorn J in Taurus S in Capricorn
Nasik(Sinhasth) Leo Leo J, S, M in Cancer
Ujjain(Sinhasth) Aries Leo J, S, M in Libra.
Currently Sun is in Capricorn, Jupiter in Scorpio, and Moon keeps changing zodiacs after 2.25 days. Interestingly, according to Jyotish, Kumbh (from which Mela derived its name) is the Mooltrikon sign of Saturn who signifies Karm (Saturn’s another ruling zodiac is Capricorn and he is exalted in Libra), Sun (ruling over Leo and exalted in Aries) signifies Aatma, Moon (ruling over Cancer and exalted in Taurus) signifies Mann, and Jupiter (ruling over Sagittarius and Pisces and exalted in Cancer) signifies Dharm. It means Atma, Mann, Dharm, and Karm are uniting at Kumbh Mela. This event occurs at the interval of twelve years because Jupiter takes twelves years to transit back in Kumbh. Considering Kalpurush Kundli, in fact this principle is foundation of Nadi Jyotish; Saturn identifies Karm (Karmesh in Kalpurush), Jupiter identifies feasibility/luck (Bhagyesh/Dharmesh in Kalpurush), Sun identifies month of occurrence (Panchmesh and Pitrukarak in Kalpurush) and Moon identifies day of event (Chaturthesh and Matrukarak in Kalpurush).

ઝબકારો: I heard India is most auspicious land on earth, and it is true because Shiv, supreme Kaal, lives in every molecule of her. Shiv is everywhere (because everything on earth have shadow and Karm) and we can recognize him through satbuddhi given by him and with his wish. Jyotish is linked with Hinduism that is why most of communists hate Jyotish.
Few days back my sister had an interview for the post of assistant professor in Gujarati department in Krushnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University. Her PhD thesis was ‘રઘુવીર ચૌધરી ના સાહિત્ય માં સાંસ્કૃતિક ચેતના Raghuveer Chaudhari na sahitya ma sanskrutik chetna (Cultural awakening in Raghuveer Chaudhari’s literature)’. My sister told me to write something for her on Sanskruti (According to her Sanskriti is wrong correct is Sankruti-Culture). I wrote one article for her and thought of sharing with you.
It is necessary to talk about religion whenever there is discussion about culture because there is very thin line between both. Culture and religion are connected together and sometime both are back bone of one another. Let us take two examples.
Example 1: Culture is reason behind identity of religion
All of Christian nations celebrate Christmas festival. Santa Clause comes in sledge cart pulled by Reindeers who are led by red nosed Rudolf. A thought came in my mind, Christianity founded by Christ in Jerusalem then how both hot desert and cold ice are connected? According to historical records Christian priests went to Scandinavian countries to spread Christianity. To convince them priests adopted their culture of Santa Clause and it became part of Christianity in Europe. This culture spread in world where Europeans migrated and this is how Santa Clause became one of the symbol of Christianity.
Example 2: Religion propagates a culture
Lets talk about India. Sanatan Dharm prevails in India. Anyway, there are two important characteristics of Sanatan Dharm are eye catching: Knowledge and accepting independent existence. Knowledge because Sanatani worship knowledge in the form of god (That also female form!) and accepting independent existence because we respected and accepted Baudhhism, Jainism, Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism etc. These two characteristics are clearly visible in India’s culture. Worship of knowledge provoked hunger of knowledge in Indians and they wrote 4 Veds, 108 Upnishads, 18 Purans, 2 epics, 1 law. It is surprising Sanatanis have many literature but none of them is authentic religious scripture i.e. absence of ‘ism’ even in scriptures. This knowledge hunger of Sanatanis gave first university in world (Takshashila), calculus(Bhaskara, Aryabhatta), chemistry (Nagarjun), Medicine (Dhanvantari), Surgery (Sushrut), Mathematics, numerals including zero etc. With this a culture of respecting scholars became popular in India. If we talk about accepting independent existence, all the ideology expert used to debate with each other regarding their ideology and mutually accepted each other opinion. If they find something good then accept it. This traditional mentality promoted believer of many faiths in India and that is fundamental reason behind culture of tolerance in India.
A Thought of Mind
I think Sanatan Dharm will be more appropriate than Hinduism due to two reasons. First reason, Hindu word derived from the book titled Indica written by Greek explorer Megasthenes (4 BCE). He derived this name from river Sindhu and that is why Hindu is geographical term. Another reason is ‘ism’ in any word means believing in that ideology only e.g. Feminism (believe in female rights only), Monotheism (Believe in only one god), Bauddhism (Believe in Buddh), Vaishnavism (Believe in Vishnu), Shaivism (Believe in Shiv) etc. But in ‘Hinduism’ we don’t believe in single faith. So, Hinduism is not appropriate.
ઝબકારો: Culture and religion are strongly bonded with each other that is why communist also hate culture along with religion.
Raghuveer Chaudhari won Gnanpeeth Award 2016 for his contribution to Gujarati literature. He was fourth Gujarati, after Umashankar Joshi, Pannalal Patel, Rajendra Shah, to win this award.
Umashankar Joshi wrote famous Gujarati song representing Gujarat’s identity Gujarat mori mori re… which is popular song in every household in Gujarat.
Pannalal Patel wrote a novel named Manvi ni Bhavai on the theme of Chappaniyo Duskal (Great famine of Vikram Sanvant 1956, 1900 AD. Another famine was Chhanavo Duskal of Vikram Sanvant 1996, 1940 AD). A movie with same title based on this novel won National Award.
Rajendra Shah wrote a famous song Tara Vina Shyam Mane Ekalu Lage… and this song is so much popular that no Navratri event will be completed without playing this song :).
Recently I read a chapter in Hindi language book of 7th standard in Gujarat Board. It was about Hazrat Ali.
This chapter reminded me Gujarati dictum નકલ ને અક્કલ નો હોય. I know this story is of Chanakya and writers have steal it directly from that story. Why I claim so? Let me put my logic.
First of all candles prepared from wax and wax came after discovery of crude oil. Otherwise there was no candle before it. Of course there were vegetable oil lamps. Original Chanakya story mentioned about using vegetable oil.
So, writers thought we adapt the Chanakya story and replace his name with Ali’s name and we can appease Muslims. But, in hurry to copy they forgot technical logic in it.

“જય જય ગરવી ગુજરાત” A poem written by kavi shree Narmad.
દક્ષિણ દિશમાં કરંત રક્ષા, કુંતેશ્વર મહાદેવ;
વળી જોય સુભટના જુદ્ધ રમણને, રત્નાકર સાગર;
On 5th April, 2014 I attended book launch titled “Aavarana” written by Dr S L Bhyrappa and translated in to English by Sandip Balkrishna. It was fantastic event and I enjoyed it a lot. He told eye opening incidence what government can do to erase history.
Once Dr S L Bhyrappa went to Pratapgadh(?) where Shivaji killed Afzal Khan with his tiger claw. A guide showed him all the places and finaly at end he took him to fort and announced completion of trip after explaining about fort and battle. Then Bhyrappa asked the guide where is the place where Shivaji killed Afzal Khan? Guide did not answer. Bhyrappa gave him ₹ 10 and guide asked for promise not to tell to anyone. He took Bhyrappa to a mosque which came in the way to fort. Bhyrappa asked this is mosque where is killing place? Guide told this is the place where Shivaji killed Afzal Khan. There was monument/structure also but local minority asked this land for mosque at the time of election which happened before 2 year. Government gave it for votebank and instructed all the guides not to say this to anyone. Suddenly thought came in Bhyrappa’s mind this story is already removed from history and now it is removed from its physical location. This incidence doesn’t exist in textbook or earth. How future generation will know the bravery of Shivaji?
ઝબકારો: What is difference between historical and mythical character? Historical character has recording on writting and physical world while mythical is recorded in writing only. Congress filed affidavit in court at the time of Ramsetu case that “Ram was a mythical person who existed in stories only”.
On 5th April, 2014 I attended book launch titled “Aavarana” written by Dr S L Bhyrappa and translated in to English by Sandip Balkrishna. It was fantastic event and I enjoyed it a lot. He told eye opening incidence how Congress brainwashed our mind by changing history. I want to write Dr S L Bhyrappa’s speech. Byrappa was NCERT facutly and he was included in the “Education Commission” headed by G. Parthsarathi and appointed by Smt Indira Gandhi. There were 5 members in it. Let us read what was the discussion between Dr S L Bhyarappa (BH) and G Parthsarathi (GP)
GP : We want to cleanse the educational syllabus in country.
BH : What is problem in it? Can you give some example?
GP : Major concern is history. There are some stories in textbooks saying Aurangzeb attacked Kashi Vishwanath temple. We should cleanse it.
BH : Whatever written is truth or false?
GP : It spoils our kids’ mind and which is wrong.
BH : What is purpose of history teaching?
GP : To bring communal harmony among kids.
Then there was lunch time. After the lunch.
GP : Let us go to second round of our meeting.
BH : We can not proceed to second round if first round itself is not completed.
Then there was lot of arguments between both of them. Finally GP called on the next day for further discussion. He called BH in corner and told
GP : Look Bhyrappa, I am from Tamilnadu and you are from Karnataka. We are neighbours. We are working for govt. We should help each other. This is their govt and we are serving them. We should do whatever they say. We should be adjustable.
Finally GP failed to convince BH. Later all 5 went to meeting on next day. The circular came meeting is posponed till the further notice. After 15 day new notice came that committee is revised with retaining 4 members and excluding Bhyrappa. Later a hardcore Marxist was added as member and he was given duty of cleansing syllabus. He nicely did it. At that time Congress was very powerful party and most of the states were ruled by congress. They immediately adopted that syllabus and non congress ruling states also adopted syllabus due to congress fear.
Note: Dr S L Bhyrappa is renowned writer in Kannada literature. His Aavarana was published first in Kannada in 2007. In first edition 3000 copies sold before it published. This book is translated in various languages.
Kannada : 39 editions.
Tamil : 4 editions
Hindi : 5 editions
Gujarati : 3 editions
Marathi : 6 editions
ઝબકારો: What is the sure truth? History is the sure truth because future is “will be” and present is “may be”. Distorting history means distortion of truth.
